The shadow pandemic

Gender Based Violence

In 2020, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of an already marginalized and overwhelmed support system for survivors of gender-based violence.

And while the world turned its attention to the Covid-19 pandemic, an insidious shadow pandemic – Gender-based Violence – surged to unimaginable heights.

33%
1 in 3 women will experience sexual assault at least once in their lifetime.
19000
Domestic abuse survivors become homeless every year
2
Two women die of violence every 5 days.

Our Action Plan

Our 5-year Action Plan for 2021 through to 2026 is built on three pillars:

When lives are on the line we are the first line of defence against gender-based violence.
Justice

Our work is to ensure that survivors understand their rights and if they choose to report we are there to ensure their voices are heard.

Surrey Women’s Centre works in partnership with local police and court to help bridge the gap between survivors and justice.

Why Support Surrey Women’s Centre

When lives are on the line we are the first line of defence against gender-based violence

When a survivor in Surrey experiences gender-based violence, their life’s on the line. When their life is on the line, Surrey Women’s Centre will likely be their first-line of contact. Surrey Women’s Centre is designated as an essential service and our work is critical in ensuring safety of survivors escaping violence.

Your support means we can respond  quickly  during a critical window of opportunity

In these life-and-death situations, time is of essence. The earlier we intervene the more likely we are to prevent serious injury or even death. The moment we receive a call, our team of frontline workers will assess the level of risk and develop a plan to ensure the safety of the survivor and their loved ones.
