#StandWithHer

Sexual violence affects 1 in 3 women. Often, the perpetrator is not a stranger but a friend, someone familiar, a family member or an intimate partner. Your support lets every woman know that you #StandWithHer in the most critical and difficult time in her life. Please give generously and help us to end the violence against women and children.

About SMART

Surrey Mobile Assault Response Team provides services over the phone and in-person to anyone who has experienced a physical or sexual assault by a stranger or someone they know.
Our team is available 24-hours a day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year to help you access emergency medical, legal and social services.

If you have been assaulted, you are not alone.

Our Surrey Mobile Assault Response Team (SMART) is a 24-hour mobile crisis response for survivors of a physical or sexual assault who need emergency medical treatment.

We can accompany you to the hospital and the police after an sexual assault. We are available, even in the middle of the night, to explore your medical and legal options.

Our confidential crisis line operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in partnership with VictimLink BC.

One of the strongest links in this chain of survival for women, is our unique and special partnership with the Forensic Nurses Unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital. This is the resource that our team depends on for every medical crisis we face after an assault. We have reached out to the team of nurses and here is what they had to say…

The SMART program is essential to my work. If a patient doesn't have anyone to be present with them, SMART will be there for support. Having a face that the patient can relate to and build a bond and relationship with, especially after a traumatic event, is part of healing. By having SMART present, they are able to start a trusting relationship with the patient, and provide a connection to help assist with their healing process. SMART also assists the person afterwards. They are a wealth of resources and provide meaningful connects based on the person's needs, that go above and beyond what a Forensic Nurse Service and even Support Worker can offer, particularly in the community. I have often felt like SMART is the missing piece to my puzzle. They are able to offer the community services and connections after the exam that I cannot always provide and I feel confident putting this persons after care in their hands.

Terri Jones, Forensic Nurse Examiner

The SMART team has been a great partner with Embrace Clinic in collaborating to provide a holistic, wrap around approach to caring for survivors of violence. Together we make sure that no person "falls through the cracks" in accessing the services and care that they need and want.

Hannah Varto, Nurse Practitioner

Knowing a SMART worker will be present during an examination process makes me feel relieved because both the support team and the survivor benefit from the innovative partnership.

Lynn Gifford, MA RN Forensic Nursing Service Coordinator

Having SMART attend with me allows me to be a better patient care advocate. Knowing that my SMART partner is focussed on the patient's emotional needs frees me to focus on making the best decisions about nursing and forensic care. When called on as a witness in court I need to be able to demonstrate I was able to give compassionate nursing care while remaining objective in collecting and recording forensic details. Being able to describe my SMART partner's complementary actions to support our patient's emotional wellbeing as being separate from my own patient care advocate actions helps me achieve this.
