Women's Counsellor

Surrey Women’s Centre is CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF VICTIM by providing a wide range of Crisis, Court and Counselling services to women and girls who experience domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other forms of gender-based violence. We are currently hiring a Women’s Counsellor. 

This position is Full Time (35 hours), Monday-Friday 9:30AM - 5:00 PM. Starting hourly wage is between $23.00-$26.00/hour - Competitive benefits package offered. Opportunities for Professional Development and Clinical Supervision offered. 
Fluency in Punjabi is an asset. Diversity is encouraged. Indigenous, LGBTQ2S and counsellors fluent in languages other than English and Punjabi are encouraged to apply. 

Job Summary:

STV counsellors provide counselling and related support to adult women who have experienced relationship violence, sexual assault, and/or childhood abuse. All work is conducted from a feminist and trauma-informed perspective of violence against women and children, and within a harm-reduction framework.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • To provide individual counselling and group-based psycho-educational counselling for adult women survivors of violence. 
  • To maintain accurate up-to-date records and case notes, including documentation of all client contacts, referrals to and consultation with community agencies and professionals. 
  • To work collaboratively with program administration to manage and develop the program, including waitlist management and collecting monthly statistics. 
  • To promote community awareness of SWC, its services, and issues related to violence against women. 
  • To enhance communication and support effective team development both within the counselling program, and at SWC. 
  • To consult, network and liaise with community agencies and professionals to maintain up-to-date information on available resources, and to maintain positive community relations and build mutually beneficial partnerships. 

Qualifications: 

  • Degree in a related human/social service field or a combination of education, training and experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience providing crisis intervention, individual and/or group counselling for women survivors of violence from a feminist, harm-reduction and trauma-based perspective. 
  • Fluency and counselling proficiency in Punjabi is an asset. 
  • Knowledge of appropriate community resources and experience making referrals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse clientele, and cultural competency. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a part of a team. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Excellent computer and administrative skills.
