This upcoming weekend, July 29th-31st is Pride Weekend in Vancouver. We would like to take this opportunity to express our support for LGBT communities, particularly given the events in Orlando this past June.
The Orlando shooting specifically targeted Latinx LGBT people, and this year’s Pride celebrations in Vancouver have been full of controversy as Black Lives Matter Vancouver protested the inclusion of a police float in the parade. These events have brought public attention to the experiences and needs of LGBT people of colour, which are not often centred in Pride events.
The women that Surrey Women’s Centre supports come from all backgrounds and identities. We recognize that lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women face unique barriers in the world, and that this is even more so the case for LGBT women of colour.
As an organization we strive to stand alongside all of these women in both solidarity and celebration.
The Vancouver Pride Society and other groups are holding many events throughout this week and the weekend, with the Pride Parade happening on Sunday along Robson and Denman Street. Additionally the Trans March will be held on Friday evening and the Dyke March and Festival on Saturday; both events will take place along Commercial Drive.
