Building a Life Without Violence

Cheryl began helping women fleeing violence long before becoming a counselor at Surrey Women’s Centre.

“I had one very good friend who experienced partner violence. I learned what it is like first-hand. That opened my eyes to the field.”

But as a new mom, Cheryl has a new perspective into the lives of the women she works with. She understands their struggles, and their resilience as mothers.

“When I think now of the women who I work with who have kids, I realize there’s so much going on with them, just because they have a child. I recognize how incredibly challenging it is to always remain present and emotionally connected with your baby, especially when sleep-deprived, impatient, or overwhelmed.”

But the women who Cheryl works with aren’t just navigating the terrain of motherhood. They’re also fleeing violence.

“She’s dealing with an abusive partner who may or may not be in the picture, going through the court process, and finding housing and income assistance. Really, she’s fighting for her basic needs.”

We want to make it easier for these moms, but we need your help. Thanks to our friends at Shoppers Drug Mart*, just by sending a free eCard, you can help provide diapers to a new mom. For a mom fleeing violence, this goes a long way.

“Poverty is one of the biggest barriers for a mom fleeing violence,” Cheryl explains. “She has to worry about her family’s housing, food, and other things that we all consider basic necessities. When you add in to that all of the other things that come with the expenses of raising kids, it’s mind boggling to me how women are able to make that work.”

Yet they do.

“There are things that women sacrifice; things that we would all consider everyday needs. But diapers are one of those things that a mom can’t go without. They’re a necessity rather than a luxury, but they’re one of the most expensive things that you have to buy as a parent.”

For too many of the women Cheryl works with, freedom from violence means choosing between buying diapers, or other necessities like food.

With your help, they won’t have to.

Send a free eCard by October 12, and a new mom will get a box of diapers. Together, we can provide the basics she needs to rebuild her life, free from violence.

We would like to thank our generous friends at the following Shoppers Drug Mart locations for making this possible. They have kindly offered to provide diapers for as many as 200 new moms!
