Diapers vs Food
Not all mothers can afford diapers for their babies.
Sadly, Surrey has the highest amount of children living in poverty in all of Metro Vancouver - 23,480 to be exact.
16,000 children are living in poverty in North Surrey and Fleetwood, with Guildford and Newton not far behind. These areas of Surrey have some of the highest rates of child poverty in all of Metro Vancouver.
Single female-led families suffer the most. Many women fleeing violence are mothers, often times leaving their former homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
These moms have a hard time providing the necessities for their children. Some have an extremely difficult choice to make – do I buy diapers or food?
That is a large portion of money, when a single mom like Chantal, might receive less than $1600 a month from income assistance and child tax benefits. This amount also needs to cover food, rent, medicine, clothing and other basic necessities.
All babies deserve food when they are hungry and clean diapers when they need changing.
You can help make sure they have both.
Let’s make sure moms like Chantal don’t have to make the choice between food or diapers.
For every 5 shares from our Facebook page, Shoppers Drug Mart will donate a box of diapers to mothers fleeing violence. So share for a diaper today!
If you have a box of new, unopened diapers you’d like to donate, call Amanda at 604-589-1868 Ext. 243 for details on drop off times and location.
Because all babies deserve diapers.
Special thanks to our generous friends at Shoppers Drug Mart!
Your support is soooo appreciated by us and the moms in need in our community!
