As part of its ongoing national commitment to end human trafficking of women and girls for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Canada, The Canadian Women’s Foundation is funding the Surrey Mobile Assault Response Team (SMART), the ground-breaking program (and the only one of its kind in Canada) that launched in April 2012 as a partnership between Surrey Women's Centre, Fraser Health and VictimLINK BC.
A special bulletin has been created by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team to assist in warning women who may be engaged in the sale of sex about two recent suspected homicides in the community of New Westminster. Both deaths occurred in the same apartment complex.
Monica loves helping others and giving back to her community. After she found out about Surrey Women’s Centre she wanted other women to know about them too.
Monica came to Surrey Women’s Centre for help after years of abuse. Her ex-husband was manipulative, controlling and physically abusive. Like many women new to Canada, Monica was unaware of her rights and the resources available to her. She said, “I was scared. I didn’t want to contact [Surrey Woman’s Centre].”
But she did, and she changed her life.
