In a recent press release, the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation applauded the success of the Surrey Mobile Assault Response Team (SMART) in promoting the safety of girls and women in our community. SMART is an innovative partnership between Surrey Women’s Centre and Fraser Health which assists women and children to access critical medical, legal and social services following a physical or sexual assault. SMART collaborates with a wide range of service providers to improve screening, intervention and treatment of physical and sexual assault.
Today on International Women’s Day, I sat silently in a packed funeral chapel and wept in unison with dozens of people missing, hurting for, and remembering the beautiful bright, gentle light that was Janice Shore. You know her name because of her unspeakable death. You’ve heard the stories, the rumours, and the few known details surrounding her last days.
In an interview with the Georgia Straight, Surrey Women’s Centre’s Maryam Majedi describes the experience of many immigrant and refugee women in Canada. When fleeing domestic violence, Majedi explains, women who are new to Canada face additional barriers to the services that will ensure their safety.

This year’s theme was “See the Change, BE THE CHANGE”. The stories of hope and inspiration helped send the message that every woman counts and every voice makes a difference. That women united together can be the change for a better future!
